What makes Lermoos so special!

More than a dream view of the Zugspitze massif…

“The foundation of diversity is uniqueness.”

These words by the Austrian writer Ernst Ferstl could just as easily be applied to the vacation resort of Lermoos: the variety of activities paired with impressive experiences from summer to winter awaken the spirit of discovery in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.

On the pulse of time

Vacation moments in Lermoos are refined with a good portion of variety. From sport and culture to tradition and modernity to vacation apartments and wellness hotels: varied vacation fun is guaranteed! With the districts of Gries, Obergarten, Untergarten, Oberdorf, Unterdorf and Widum, the village lies at 1,004 meters above sea level on the Via Claudia Augusta far away from the Inn Valley – in the Außerfern. As secluded and tranquil as Lermoos, with the Loisach river flowing through it, may be, there has never been room for boredom here. As one of the oldest villages in the district of Reutte, Lermoos was first mentioned in 1060 and was already passed through very early on by traveling merchants. The old Roman road once formed the link between northern and southern Europe, was a trade route, an axis of encounters and cultural exchange.

The municipality of Lermoos then and now

The location on the western edge of the Lermooser Moos, a former marshland, can be clearly determined, whereas the origin of the village name is still not completely clear. It is rumored that the place name was derived from “Lärchenmoos” and it is also assumed that the origins go back to the term “Larinmoos”, which means “empty, unused moss”. What is clear, however, is that the village’s favorable location on the Fernpass quickly brought it great importance as an economic factor. In the period after the Second World War, its importance for commercial travelers was increasingly replaced by tourism. Today, the municipality in the district of Reutte in Tyrol between the Lechtal Alps, the Ammergau Alps and the Wetterstein mountains has a population of 1137.

On the road in paradise

Varied winter days, adventurous summers. This is what vacationers experience at the foot of the Zugspitze. A ski paradise on the hotel doorstep in the Grubigstein ski area, plus sledging runs, winter and snowshoe hikes, cross-country ski trails in the “Moos” of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena and ski tours – you’re spoiled for choice! You can also get a taste of the mountain air in summer: whether it’s high up on a hike to the local mountain Grubigstein or the highest peak in the Ammergau Alps – Daniel -, on Moosle’s explorer trail or on single trails over hill and dale. The varied program is rounded off at the golf course of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, and airy at Alex Rauter’s flying school. The panorama pool in Lermoos with three swimming pools and wonderful panoramic views of the Zugspitze is a refreshing place to be. The Catholic parish church of St. Katharina and numerous small chapels are among the well-known cultural sights in the village. Experience local history up close with a visit to the Felsenheim residence and the Drei Mohren Museum. Finally, let’s take a look at the Lermoos valley basin and enter the Tuftl Alm viewing platform at 1,486 meters above sea level in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.

A vacation in the Zugspitz Arena region in the heart of Tyrol’s alpine mountains is worth an adventure for all explorers. Many special features await you in the region around the Gourmet & SPA Hotel Post Lermoos. That’s where the action is!
