One hundred years ago, a story began on the Zugspitze that continues to shape the Alpine region to this day: with the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn , Tyrol’s first cable car was built, opening up a completely new route to the summit. A visionary idea became an Alpine reality—and for many people, the Zugspitze became accessible for the first time. Today, the cable car is one of Tyrol’s most historic mountain railways. In the anniversary year 2026 , this story will be impressively retold at the “Faszination Zugspitze” interactive museum at 2,962 meters—as a journey through time, altitudes, and perspectives.
A Century of Exploration in the Mountains
The construction of the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn marked a turning point and the beginning of a new era in Alpine tourism—mountains were no longer just climbed, but became places to be experienced. The museum traces this development step by step: from early, almost floating cabins to the modern “Himmelsstürmerin,” which today comfortably takes visitors to the summit. Historical exhibits, projections, and digital presentations bring the history to life and also give a sense of the visionaries behind the project—above all, Dr. Hermann Stern.

The interactive museum “Fascination Zugspitze” is not a place for quiet contemplation, but a space for immersion. Here, history isn’t just told—it’s brought to life. Multimedia installations, projections, and interactive elements transport visitors directly into the world of the cable car. Highlights include the original, preserved cabin No. 5 from the 1970s, the walk-through kaleidoscope, and the museum theater, which takes visitors on a journey through time exploring the history of the Tyrolean Zugspitze Railway. The experience is complemented by a detailed model of the region and digital journeys through time that connect the past and the future.
Weather, Change, and Responsibility in the Mountains
In addition to the history of technology, nature also takes center stage: extreme weather events, climate data, and changes in the Alpine landscape are vividly brought to life here. A detailed relief map of the Eastern Alps and digital visualizations show how the mountain is changing—and just how closely humans and nature are connected.
